Each month, eg3.com the editorial staff surveys thousands of web sites to identify the 'best' or 'most interesting' news, white papers, demo's, and other electronic design sites - focused specifically on designers of electronic products. Here are our highlights and top choices from the last thirty days. Comments please to info@eg3.com.

QNX Case Study - "Using System Tracing to Improve Packet Forwarding Performance"
Complex embedded systems can be difficult to optimize using traditional debugging methods. To visualize what's going on without altering system behavior, developers can use non-intrusive trace analysis techniques. The case study "Using System Tracing to Improve Packet Forwarding Performance" examines how the system profiler in the QNX® Momentics® development suite was used to uncover hidden bottlenecks in an SMP system.
EMBEDDED PROCESSOR FORUM HIGHLIGHTS:
May brought the Embedded Processor Forum to the Bay Area, hosted by In-Stat/MDR. Traditionally, this conference is a high-end, 'meeting of the minds,' and this year was no different. You can purchase the conference proceedings (unfortunately, mainly a collection of powerpoint slides), or the more useful technical seminars at the Web site. Transcripts of the latter include:

  • 'Microprocessors for Professionals,' by Tom R. Halfhill;
  • 'Best Processors for Low Power Applications,' by Max Baron; and
  • 'Choosing the Best High-Performance Embedded Microprocessor,' by Jim Turley.

Turley has just joined the staff of Embedded Systems Programming Magazine as editor-in-chief. We hope that Turley will bring his keen insight and great sense of humor to the magazine, soon.

Among major news, ARM announced their first integrated multiprocessor core. The MPCore™ synthesizable multiprocessor, based on the ARMv6 architecture, can be configured to contain between one and four processors delivering up to 2600 Dhrystone MIPS of performance. The MPCore multiprocessor implements Adaptive Shutdown™ technology and the ARM® Intelligent Energy Manager technology to reduce power consumption by up to 85 percent. Release here . Altera announced its NIOS II family.

NEWS SUMMARY - TOP STORIES OF THE LAST THIRTY DAYS:
With a whiff of economic prosperity in the air, tech companies of all sizes used May as a launching pad for new products and services. Relogix , for example, announced the general availability of Relogix/86. This software conversion tool takes 80x86-family assembler source files and automatically re-codes them in readable, maintainable C, and follows a similar product for the 68K. Release here .

Taking advantage of the momentum in the VoIP space, Trinity Convergence and ARM announced a single chip Solution for VoIP-enabled SOHO/residential devices. Release here . As mentioned above, Altera announced NIOS II , and Accelerated Technology (Mentor Graphics) followed with the first commercial real-time operating system (RTOS) and development tools support for the new processor. Release here . FS2® also announced debug tools, here .

COOL NEW WEB SITES:
eg3.com 's mission is to research, identify, and promote cool new Web resources - white papers, demo's, seminar's, free code. etc. Here are the top new Web sites we have found in the last month. First and foremost, EDN released their 2004 DSP Directory - a 'must have' index of all the major DSP's. Browse it here . On the job front, we identified EngineerJobSearch.com , the Engineering Employment & Resource Network , and the Job Hunters' Bible , all excellent sites for those seeking employment.

Cisco announced the Growing with Technology Awards, 2004 - essentially a contest to submit cool designs using Cisco technology in networking and, according to the rules, you don't even have to submit something to enter. Grand prize is $25,000 of Cisco products for your company.

For the ARM and Assembler fanatics, check out Richard Murray's Arm Assembler . Don't miss the GNU ARM toolchain for Cygwin, Linux and MacOS . This site contains a pre-compiled binary distribution for the (hopefully) latest GNU ARM/Newlib toolchain for Cygwin, Linux and MacOS. The toolchain consists of the GNU binutils, compiler set (GCC) and debugger (Insight for Windows and Linux, GDB only for MacOS). Newlib is used for the C library.
