Initially the vision of Cal-(IT)2 director Larry Smarr, the effort has drawn Grid computing visionaries from accross the field, including USC's Carl Kesselman, UIC's Phil Papadopolous and Tom DeFanti, and UCSD's Mark Ellisman. Still, for all the high-profile involvement of leaders within the Grid community, the OptIPuter seems to have flown nearly under the radar for the last year. GRIDtoday correspondent Neil Alger spoke recently with Dr. Andrew Chien, who has been called the "chief software architect" of the project, in an attempt to shed some light on the OptIPuter's progress since September of last year. [ ] 101322) GRID DELIVERY: A NEW TECHNIQUE FOR CONTENT IN THE ENTERPRISE By Daniel Sapir, Bandwiz, Inc. "Grid Delivery" is a new type of system for content delivery focused on the needs of the enterprise. It is a flexible system that utilizes the network and computing resources already present in the enterprise much more efficiently. [ ] 101323) SUN GRID-READY CLUSTERS SCALE UP TO TWO TERAFLOPS Addressing the increasing demand for the combination of high-performance and highly productive computing, Sun Microsystems announced the availability of Sun Fire Superclusters based on the Sun Fire 6800, Sun Fire 12K and Sun Fire 15K server platforms. [ ] 101324) ENGINEERING INSTITUTE ADDS TO NATIONAL GRID Sweden's Institute of Technology expects to triple its cluster computing capacity with additional computers from HP.
